Core concepts and quick-reference summaries

DHCP

Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

A network management protocol used to automate the process of configuring devices on IP networks.

Static Addressing

Manual configuration per device. Prone to human error, configuration overhead, and IP address conflicts.

Dynamic Addressing

Automated allocation via a centralized server. Leases IPs dynamically and prevents duplicate assignments.

APIPA IP Address

Automatic Private IP Addressing

A fallback mechanism used by operating systems when a DHCP server is unavailable or fails to respond.

  • Address Range: 169.254.0.1 – 169.254.254.254 (Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 / /16)
  • Inbuilt Feature: Natively integrated into modern OS environments (Windows, macOS) without requiring manual setup or external services.
Advantages
  • DHCP-like Fallback: Automatically self-assigns an operational IP so local devices can communicate without requiring manual static IP intervention.
  • Reduces Broadcast Waste: Halts infinite DHCP discovery broadcasts across the LAN when the DHCP server is permanently down or unreachable.
